ANNATTO SEED is a soapmaking herb you definitely want to have on hand.  Use it to give your soaps a warm colour range.  This one herb can yield everything from butter yellow to pumpkin orange and all shades inbetween - it just depends on how much you add.

Here are a few different ways to infuse the annatto seeds -

Hot Infusion - place your seeds in your chosen oil and heat gently on a low heat for approximately 2 hours. Strain the seeds before using the oil in your soap.

Cold Infusion - place your seeds in your chosen oil and leave on a warm windowsill  for a week or so.  Strain the seeds before using the oil in your soap.

I always have a windowsill infusion on the go.  As soon as I use one lot I add a few more annatto seeds and fill up the jar with olive oil and start again.

As a guide - Infuse 1 to 2 tablespoons of seeds in 100ml of vegetable oil to produce a natural orange colourant that works well in cold process soap.  Paler shades down to a light yellow can be achieved by using fewer seeds/more oil.
