Alkanna tinctoria

ALKANET ROOT POWDER is a natural botanical that will colour your cold process soap grey/blue/mauve/purple depending on the amount used and the pH of the soap batter.

You can infuse the alkanet roots in oil or just stick blend it straight into your soap for a speckled effect.

I always have a windowsill infusion on the go.  As soon as I use one lot I add a more alkanet roots and fill up the jar with olive oil and start again.  Or if not wanting to wait for the cold infusion, you can gently heat the oil with the alkanet roots and hold on a very low heat - a crock pot is perfect for this method.  This will extract the colour quicker.

As a guide - Infuse 1 tablespoon of powder in 140ml of vegetable oil to produce a lavender shade that works well in cold process soap.  Paler shades down to a light grey can be achieved by using less powder or more oil or more powder for a darker purple.

And remember - the colour of your base oils will influence the shade you achieve.  Have fun experimenting!
